Midnight Cipher

Typography · 2023

A stencil typeface that hides and reveals.

Midnight Cipher started as lettering for a poster series and grew into a display typeface with uppercase letters, figures and a set of alternate glyphs.

Challenge

Stencil letters lose recognition when the gaps grow. Finding the limit took many test prints.

Approach

Every letter is drawn on the same nine-unit grid, with gaps placed where the eye fills them most easily. Alternates allow more extreme versions for posters.

Result

The typeface was used for the Neon Artifact posters and is available in the studio’s print shop as a specimen poster.
