The Unexpected Joy of Printed Matter

What a small risograph printer taught me about limits, mistakes and colour.

Two years ago I bought a second-hand risograph printer. It is slow, loud and imprecise, and it has changed how I design.

Working with limits

Each colour is printed separately, and layers never line up perfectly. Instead of fighting it, I now design with that misregistration in mind.

Mistakes become ideas

Some of my favourite prints started as errors: a drum loaded with the wrong ink, a sheet fed twice. The Neon Artifact prints came from one of those accidents.
